Department Of Periodontics

‘Peri’ –`Odontology’ literally means around the teeth and hence it`s the science of tissues around the teeth. As the keepers of health, it is the primary aim of this branch of dentistry to ensure the optimal health of the tissues around the teeth. Oral health has ceased to be within the confines of the oral cavity alone. With the current accumulation of evidence, it can be easily quoted that oral cavity has potent effects on the general health and vice – versa. Hence the preliminary goal of our specialty is to attain excellence in the routine periodontal practice, which in turn would reflect upon the general health of patients.

Vision

The primary vision is to equip and train the undergraduate students in the diagnosis and non-surgical management of mild forms of periodontal diseases. The postgraduate students are trained to diagnose advanced periodontal diseases and treat the same with advanced surgical procedures namely regeneration and Perio-plastic surgeries. They are also instilled with the basic tenets of standard research.

There is a dearth of dental and more specifically, periodontal awareness among the general public. Maintenance of oral hygiene is often allotted the least time and attention. Comparatively the urban population scores better over the rural population in this area. Better accessibility and utilization of dental resources in the urban strata could probably explain this difference. Thus the accessory goal would be to target the rural population with education in basics of oral care. This is achieved through the adjunctive aid of public health dentistry in conducting rural dental camps.

Finally the recent innovations in the field of periodontology namely Implantology and Stem Cell Research have been included to further the scope of treatment rendered and expand the gambits of Periodontology.

The flow of knowledge will come to standstill unless it is passed on to the pupils. Hence our department strives to impart this knowledge to the undergraduate and postgraduate students both academically and clinically, encouraging them to excel in all aspects.

Mission

To impart quality training and knowledge to the students and to develop the department to attain global standards incorporating state of the art research facilities, care for the patients by providing them with advanced treatment modalities.

It gives me immense pleasure to head the Department of Periodontology which has carved a niche for itself amongst the academic institutions with numerous accolades, scientific achievements and innovative research projects to its credit. We are proud recipients of the coveted ICMR scholarship by the Govt. of India for our society centric research approach. It has been my constant endeavor to facilitate learning amongst the students, provide necessary industry exposure and make them future ready for the bigger challenges in life. I believe in sharing responsibilities and empowering my colleagues who constantly strive selflessly for the glory of the department. This teamwork has yielded fruitful results which is manifested in creating university rank holders, numerous scientific presentations and publications from the department. Exposure to various surgical and treatment modalities involving cutting edge technology has created many successful alumni who are thriving in their practice. We wish to keep updating and challenge ourselves to create a better tomorrow for our department.
